Rainy Day, Bookstore, Galoshes

I'm on my own today at the used book store. It's raining for the third day in a row and the store, as a result, has been very quiet.

Three adorable children just came down the stairs with their grandmother, each wearing galoshes in a different color (green, blue, and black with pink hearts for the girl). They stopped halfway down the stairs, leaning over the railings to stare out at the sea of books.

"I can't believe my eyes," said the younger boy in a hushed voice.

"Shhhh," said his sister, brown eyes darting towards me to see if they would be scolded.

Oh, and now Grandma is approaching! What will she buy for them?...Oh, a collection of children's poems about animals. Good choice. And she noticed my favorite boy and girl bookends so you know Grandma has good taste.

READER, the little girl just sat down in a chair, tipped her head all the way back to look at the shelves of books and said, "This is cozy."

Now they are wandering around, gasping and not even touching anything. It's the most adorable thing ever. This fulfills your cuteness quotient for the day. You are welcome.

Edit (5 mins later): they just asked me if we had any shark books, then amended it to "cute shark books." And then, once I managed to find a few books on sharks, the older boy, who was looking through them very seriously, exclaimed, "Oh Catherine! Come here and look. This is the cutest shark! Isn't he cute?"

And his sister agreed that it was very cute. OMG, you guys, my cold, little heart is melting.

  1. Ooookay. I see that winky face. I know what you're thinking. But a girl of a CERTAIN AGE should be able to say that kids are cute without wanting to have kids of her own. Just like I love red convertible porsches but I'm not going to buy one, and I'm definitely not interested in building my own.
